Week of October 1-5

Math
In Math this week, we are continuing our practice on chapter 2.The chapter 2 test will be Friday, October 5, 2012. In class, we will be reviewing all the lessons and work on solving word problems. The study guide went home today for the test.


Spelling
We will be on List 6 this week. The Pretest is on Monday and the final test will be on Friday. If your child gets 0,1, or 2 wrong on the pretest they will have 2 challenge activities and the cursive sheet, they have the option to take the test on Friday. If they get more than 2 words wrong, they will have the regular work. (Cursive sheet and two assigned activities) The homework is due on Thursday.


Reading
We will focus on inferencing this week. The story Ballad of Mulan will be read in conjunction with this reading skill.  October calendars are going home on Monday.The Calendar will be due on Thursday, November 1, 2012.


English: We will start our "Me Bag" writing unit. Our “Me Bag” presentations will start on Wednesday , Friday and the following Monday. They will receive a rubric for their presentation on Monday. Please encourage your child to practice in front of their family.

Social Studies
We will continue studying continents and oceans. See if your child can name all seven continents and four oceans.


Science
In Science, we will be finishing up with Chapter 9 Water Cycle this week. The Chapter 9 test will be Friday, October 5, 2012. We will spend Thursday reviewing for the test by playing a game. The study guide went home today, so please use the online text to study with your child.

Week of September 24-28

 

Wow! School is quickly flying by and this weekend marks the official start of Fall!

 Important:
Please continue to sign your child's assignment books.

Wednesday is Johnny Appleseed Day-please have your child bring in a peeled, cored, and sliced apple for our homemade apple sauce!

Thank you to the parents who have sent things in for our celebration on Wednesday, it is very much appreciated!
Friday is early Dismissal! If you would like to donate to the classroom treasure chest, that would be very much appreciated!

Math
In Math this week, we have finished  Chapter 1 and will be moving onto chapter 2. Your child will receive a new chapter 2 study packet that will stay in his/her Math pocket. Please be reviewing nightly with your child.On Tuesday we will have a graded review over lessons 1 and 2 (Comparing and ordering numbers). On Friday we will be having another graded review over lessons 4 and 5 only (Rounding to the tens and hundreds place).

Reading
On Tuesday, students will be tested on the current story we are reading The Lost and Found which is in their volume 1 reading book here at school.  This is an open book test.  Students can take this book home at any time and return it to school the next day.  They also have a vocab test on this selection on Thursday over the words in the story (A study guide of the words will be sent home Friday 9-21-12).  We will continue working on sequencing and summarizing. 

English
We will take the chapter 1 English test on Monday 9-24-12. The study guide went home and we have been reviewing a lot in class. Please continue to work with your child at home doing the practice tests at the end of the chapter. On Wednesday we will be starting Chapter 2-Nouns.


Social Studies
We are going to start Social Studies again! This will be every couple days, in between Science. We will be starting with Continents and Oceans. There will be a quick graded review on Thursday.


Science
In Science we will continue with Chapter 9 Water Cycle. We will be working on Lesson 3 next week. The Chapter 9 test will be the following week.

Week of 9/17/12

Math
In Math this week, we will continue working on Chapter 1. On Thursday Sept. 20,  we will have our first Chapter test. Chapter 1, lessons 1-5. The study guide went home, so please be reviewing with your child. Also, please be practicing math facts at home with your child, we will be starting addition Math facts soon.
Spelling
We will be on List 4 this week. The Pretest is on Monday and the final test will be on Friday. If your child gets 0,1, or 2 wrong on the pretest they will have 2 challenge activities and the cursive sheet, they have the option to take the test on Friday. Reading
We will be finishing up our initial review of the Reading strategies this week. There will be a quiz on the kinds of strategies we reviewed on Wednesday Sept. 19. A short study guide will go home Monday.  We will then focus on the strategy of sequencing and summarizing. We will do this with the story Lost and Found. A vocabulary quiz on the words from that story will be the following week.
English
We will be finishing up chapter 1 in English this week and the test has been moved back to Monday September 24.  We will spend Friday reviewing in preparation for the test. A study guide will go home on Monday.  We will continue to work on DOL in school.
Social Studies

We will still be focusing on Science this week, so there will be Social Studies.

Science
In Science we will continue with Chapter 9 Water Cycle. We will be working on Lesson 2 next week; there will be an open book quiz most likely Friday Sept. 21 or Monday Sept. 24.

September 10-14

Math:
In Math this week, we will continue working on Chapter 1. On Thursday we will have a graded review on Lesson 3 (standard form, Expanded form, and word form). The Chapter test will be the following week. Please be practicing math facts at home with your child.

Spelling:
We will be on List 3 this week. The Pretest is on Monday and the final test will be on Friday. If your child gets 0,1, or 2 wrong on the Pretest they will have challenge activities for homework and they have the option to take the test on Friday. If they get more than 2 words wrong, they will have the regular work. The homework is due on Thursday.
English:
We will continue Chapter 1 in English. We will work on Lessons 4 and 5.  We have also been working on D.O.L. (daily oral review). A study guide went home 9/7/12. The quiz will be on Thursday September 13.

Reading:
We will continue to work on our Reading strategies that good readers use. We will work on connections, questioning and summarizing this week. Please continue to be filling in the Reading Calendar. 20 minutes a night of Reading is what we expect, but anything more is AWESOME!

Social Studies:
We will be taking a break from Social Studies and transitioning to Science.
Science:
In Science we are going to start with Chapter 9 Water Cycle. On Wednesday we will be taking an open-note quiz on Lesson 1. I will model how to go through the book to find the answers for this quiz.
