Week of October 29-November 2

On Wednesaday 10/31/12, our Halloween Parade begins at 1:00.  (Students will change into their costumes a12:45.) Classroom parties begin at 1:30.
Conferences with my homeroom are next week.  If you have forgotten your time, please feel free to email me.
Please continue to sign your child's assignment books.

Math
In Math this week, we will be finishing chapter 4-Subtraction. We will work all week on subrtracting numbers and across zeros. The final test will be on Friday, November 2, 2012. A study guide will go home next week, but  a great way to practice would be pages 98 and 101 in there textbooks at home.

Reading:
Our class will continue identifying cause and effect using our IPICK books and our small reading group selections. 
Spelling
We will be switching things up for Spelling this week. The students will be tested on Halloween words. There will be a pretest on Monday and if they get 0, 1, or 2 worng, they will not have to take the test on Friday. There will be no challenge words due to the fact that they are Halloween words. A packet will go home on Monday that will replace the usual Spelling homework. The homework will be due on Friday, since Halloween is Wednesday, along with the final test.
English:
We are finishing up our descriptive writing unit on the haunted house stories. The stories are look Spook-a-rific already! The final draft will be due on Tuesday, if your child has not already turned it in. Friday will be the pretest for unit 2-nouns.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We will start studying the town we live in: Downers Grove! We are starting with the histroy, so we can be familiair with DG when we go on our field trip!!
Science:
In Science, we will continue to study chapter 4-ecosystems. This has been one of our favorites to study thus far!

Week of October 22-26

Halloween is right around the corner, here are some details about that day:
Parade and party is on Wednesday, October 31
. The parade time is set for 1:00 and the party will follow right after the parade. (1:30) Costumes are to be brought in with your child on Wednesday; Students cannot wear their costumes to school. Remember, we only have a short time to change and we will be changing in the classroom (one class for boys, another for girls).  Please make sure their costumes are suitable for this. No weapons of any kind are allowed.

Pictures:  Our retake day is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29th.
 Math
In Math this week, we will be starting Chapter 4-Subtraction. We will begin with lesson 1 and move through the chapter. A checkpoint on estimating and subtracting will tentatively be on Friday, 10-26. Please continue to practice addition Math facts, as well as subtraction facts.
Reading:
In addition to inferring, which we will continue practicing throughout the year, we will be using the predicting strategy this week as we read Cliffhanger in our reading series.  We will also explore cause and effect. The students will be quizzed on the vocabulary words from Cliffhanger on Thursday, October 25, 2012. The vocabulary packet should remain in the Bring Back to School side of their binder and they should be reviewing those words nightly. 
Spelling
We will be on List 9 this week. The Pretest is on Monday and the final test will be on Friday. If your child gets 0,1, or 2 wrong on the pretest they will have 2 challenge activities and the cursive sheet, they have the option to take the test on Friday. If they get more than 2 words wrong, they will have the regular work. (Cursive sheet and two assigned activities) The homework is due on Thursday.

English:
We have started our descriptive writing unit and will continue with our persuasive/descriptive haunted house story. It will be a SPOOKtacular story. 


Social Studies
We have finished studying hemispheres.In two weeks will begin our Downers Grove unit. We will start with the history of Downers Grove and then move into Modern Day Downers Grove. The field trip will be coming up and a permission slip will be sent home within a few weeks. 
Science:
In Science, we started chapter 4-Ecosystems. There will be an open book quiz on lesson 1 on Monday, 10-22-12. We will then start learning about types of ecosystems in lesson 2 later in the week.

Week of 15-19

Halloween is right around the corner, here is some details about that day:
Parade and party is on Wednesday, October 31
The parade time is still being taken into consideration, I will inform you as soon as I know the time. The party will follow right after the parade.
Costumes are to be brought in with your child on Wednesday
Students cannot wear their costumes to school
Remember, we only have a short time to change and we will be changing in the classroom (one class for boys, another for girls).  Please make sure their costumes are suitable for this.  Trips to the bathroom are not allowed
No weapons of any kind are allowed.
 Math
In Math this week, we are continuing chapter 3 Addition. A graded review on adding two and three digit numbers will be on Monday, October 15, 2012 and the chapter test will be on Friday, October 10, 2012. A good way to study with your child is reviewing the packet in their Math folder, as well as, doing the chapter test in the textbook.

We will be on List 8 this week. The Pretest is on Monday and the final test will be on Friday. If your child gets 0,1, or 2 wrong on the pretest they will have 2 challenge activities and the cursive sheet, they have the option to take the test on Friday. English:
We are going to dive right into descriptive/persuasive writing as we prepare to write a haunted house story. We will be persuading someone to buy our haunted house. Then we will be decorating a haunted house that will match our description.
Social Studies
We have finished continents and oceans and studying hemispheres. The students will need to be familiar with the equator and the prime meridian, as well as, the four hemispheres. A quiz over the hemispheres will be Friday, October 19, 2012.
Science
In Science, we will be starting chapter 4-Ecosystems towards the end of next week.

Week of October 9-12

Math
In Math this week, we are beginning chapter 3 Addition.We will start with lesson two and work through the chapter. A graded review on adding two and three digit numbers will be on Monday, October 15, 2012. You can expect a chapter test towards the end of that week. Please continue to practice math facts with your child.  


Spelling
We will be on List 7 this week. The Pretest is on Tuesday and the final test will be on Friday. If your child gets 0,1, or 2 wrong on the pretest they will have 2 challenge activities and the cursive sheet, they have the option to take the test on Friday. If they get more than 2 words wrong, they will have the regular work. (Cursive sheet and two assigned activities) The homework is due on Friday since we have a four day week.


Reading
We will continue to focus on inferencing this week with the story "Ballad of Mu
lan". A vocabulary test on the words from the "Balad of Mulan" will be Wednesday, October 10, 2012.  There will also be an open book comprehension quiz on the story on Friday, October 12, 2012. We have also been working on Extended response in class. This is a difficult skill that we will work on all year long.




English
We will be finishing up our  "Me Bag" speeches. If your child did not perform on Friday, they will on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Later in the week we will start our descriptive writing unit. 

Social Studies
We will continue working on continents and Oceans. A quiz over the 7 continents and 5 oceans will be Thursday, October 11, 2012. They will need to know where they are on a map.


Science
In Science, we are finished with Chapter 9-weather. We will be taking a break from Science this week and focusing on Social Studies.
