Week of December 18-21

Some good winter weather rules for PV: With Winter almost upon us, here’s a quick note about recess: Children NEED boots to be in snow- snow pants are not required, but kids should know that if they get their clothes wet, they will be wet for the afternoon.... Snow/ice is not to be thrown for any reason at all.  They may roll it, or build with it, but not launch it, etc.

We are approaching our final week before winter break.  Lots of fun activities are in store for our Panthers!  Read below and find out!!

Coming Up Next Week:

Spelling:  We will resume after break!

Reading & Language Arts:   This week we’ll read and interpret The Night Before Christmas. It will be fun!

December logs are due on 12/21.

Social Science: We finished this section of Mystery Science. We’ll be starting our next Mystery Science unit when we return.

Mrs. Mandru's Math Class:  We have reviewed time, mass, and volume. We will continue after break with fractions and more measuring.

Reading & Language Arts:   We have started our second unit in Reading: All about culture and traditions! We read the Keeping Quilt and will continue some activities with this text. The you tube link is on your child's classroom on the Chromebook if you are interested in the story. There will be a vocab quiz over the words in the book on Wednesday, 12/13.

December reading logs are due the last day of school 12/21.

Social Science: We have our first Mystery Science test on Thursday 12/14. A study guide went home. Students should study the vocab words along with their quizzes that are stapled to the study guide.

   

Mrs. Mandru's Math Class:  This week we will continue with measurement. We will be working on measuring mass with scales.

Week of December 4-8

Welcome to December!  The weather is starting to feel winter-like so please remember to have your child dress appropriately for the weather; we do go outside for recess.

Coming Up Next Week:

Spelling:   The test is scheduled for Friday the 8th. Please review the words at home. We are doing activities in class.

Reading & Language Arts:   This week we will start out Trimester 2 culture and traditions unit.  Our first story is The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco.  It tells the story of a special family quilt that started in Russia and made its way to the United States in the early 20th century.  We will be making our own class quilt which will describe our own family traditions!

The December Log is coming home today!

Social Science: We continue Mystery Science which focuses on flowers. The test is scheduled for 12/12. A study guide will be going home next week.

   

Mrs. Mandru's Math Class:  This week we begin Unit 4 which focuses on Measurement & Fractions.

Week of November 20-27

Today marks the end of Trimester 1. What a wonderful first one-third of the year we’ve had!!  Grades will be finalized soon. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving break with your families.  This blog will include information for the two days next week and also the following week. Happy Thanksgiving!!

Coming Up the Next 2 Weeks:

Spelling:   New sorts will go home on Monday, November 27th and the test will be on December 8th.  

Reading & Language Arts:   We’ll finish up Myths.  We’ll also be focusing on verbs.  Keep track of those reading minutes for November!  The November log is due on or before 11/30.  A new one for December will be going home on December 1st.

Social Science: We will continue our study of plants in Mystery Science. Ask your child something they learned so far!

Mrs. Mandru's Math Class:  We’re finishing up Unit 3 on 3 digit addition and subtraction.  There will be a Unit 3 assessment on Thursday 11/30.  The study guide went home already and is due back on Monday 11/20.

Thank you to our volunteers who came on our DG trip! We had a blast!

Friday is the end of Trimester one! Time is flying this year!

Spelling:   We are working on our sorts and menu activities in class. The test will be on 11/17. We will be working on the activities in class.

Reading & Language Arts:  We will continue our study on Myths by reading about King Midas. We will also continue to review our reading skills of cause and effect and sequencing. For language arts, we will be focusing on verbs this week!

For writing: Students will be bringing home a blank turkey and will need to "disguise their turkey". The turkey will be due back on Wednesday 11/15. We will be doing an informational writing piece in school next week about how to disguise your turkey and why the farmer shouldn't eat him.

Please make sure your child is reading! November logs are due on or before November 30.

Social Science:  We have finished up learning about Downers Grove and had a fabulous field trip! We love putting our learning into action! We will be switching over to science this week. We will be starting a unit called Power of Plants!

Mrs. Mandru's Math Class: We are deep into our unit on rounding and multi-digit addition and subtraction. We have the test scheduled for 11/30!

Social Science:  We will be continuing our unit on Downers Grove history this week!  There will be a short quiz on this information once we are done with our packets.A permission slip went home today for our Downers Grove field trip. We will be going on November 9th. Please turn in the permission slip on or before 10/20.

Week of October 10-13

We are halfway through the 1st trimester of third grade! Hopefully, grades are being monitored on line.  If you are having problems doing so, please call the office. Have a wonderful Columbus Day weekend! I’m hoping the weather will cooperate!

Coming Up Next Week:

Spelling:  We are working on 3 activities in class to help practice our spelling. You can also be practicing at home for our test which will be Friday.

Reading & Language Arts:  This week, we’ll be working on using better descriptive language when writing, character traits, theme, and cause and effect.  These are all very important reading and writing skills.  

Please make sure your child is reading! October logs are due by October 31st.

Social Science:  We will be continuing our unit on Downers Grove history this week! This unit leads to a really fun field trip visiting historical places all around our town.  

Mrs. Mandru's Math Class:  We have begun digging into multiplication. We have worked on repeated addition and arrays. A checkpoint will be on Thursday. NOTE: We will send home worksheets for homework, but they are just for extra practice. They do not need to be turned back in unless you want to.

Week of October 2-6

Lifetouch will be at Prairieview on Tuesday, October 3rd for retakes. If you would like your child's picture retaken, please return the original picture package with your child on or before Oct 3rd (retake day). Lifetouch will re-photograph free of charge and provide you with new pictures in a few weeks. Students who were absent on the original picture day should have received an order form to have their picture taken this Tuesday. Questions? Please call the office at 630-783-5100.

Coming Up Next Week:

Spelling:   New word lists will be given out on Monday. Please study these words with you child. We will be working in class on various activities to helped with spelling and understanding of the words. The test will be on Friday, October 13th.

Reading & Language Arts:  This week, we’ll be working on theme/setting/plot and visualization.  We’ll be comparing a couple of stories in a series and also “visualizing” a funny witch and a crazy monster.  This should be fun!

 A new October log is coming home today.  These are worth 10 points.

Social Science:  We will be starting our unit on Downers Grove history this week! This unit leads to a really fun field trip visiting historical places all around our town.
