Week of January 7-January 11

All the third grade elves, as well as Mrs. Forsman's penguins, decided to have a party in the teacher's lounge. They did some damage, but it looks as though they had a great time. I know Elfredo had a blast with our class this year. We will have to say godobye to him until next Christmas!

We have MAP's- Reading testing on Tuesday, January 8 at 8:05. Please make sure your child gets a good night's rest Monday night and a healthy breakfast so they are well prepared for the test. The Math MAP's test is on Wednesday at 9:15.

Thank you so much for the class gift and all the other gifts! I feel so blessed to be teaching such a wonderful group of students.

I can’t believe it but it is holiday break already. Time is flying by.

If you haven’t done so already please have your child bring in $7.50 by Wednesday Jan 9. We have some scientists coming to our school to do a lot of fun experiments with the students in regards to matter, since we just finished this unit! Matter MATTERS!

Thank you to the students who donated to the treasure chest this week! If you would like to donate to the treasure chest, that would be very helpful.

Math:
We will be starting chapter 6-data when we return from break. We will also focus on our times 2’s. The multiplication test will be on Friday 1/11/13.

Reading:
Our Christmas around the world presentations were fabulous. We learned all about other countries' traditions. When we return we will be focusing on a story call The night of the Pufflings. Our skill we will be working on is fact and opinion. There will be a vocab quiz on the words from the story the following week.

Spelling:
We will be working on list 13. The Pretest is on Monday and the final test will be on Friday. If your child gets 0,1, or 2 wrong on the pretest they will have 2 challenge activities and the cursive sheet, they have the option to take the test on Friday. If they get more than 2 words wrong, they will have the regular work. (Cursive sheet and two assigned activities) The homework is due on Thursday.

English:
We will start unit 3-Verbs when we come back. The pretest will be on Monday.

Social Studies:
Our class is all done learning about government. When we return we will start chapter 3-Culture. This chapter will include learning about different cultures, as well as, why people moved to the U.S.A. You can expect to see things coming home about a culture day presentation in the coming weeks.

Science:
We are done studying matter, but we will continue working on projects that involve matter. Tuesday the students will need to bring to school something they can taste, as well as something they can hear.
Also, if you have a spare magazine or two at home and would like to donate it to the class for a project, that would be very helpful.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season! I will see you all NEXT YEAR!

Week of December 17-21

A GREAT big thank you to the Mayor of Downers Grove for coming talk to the third grade. It was great to have Mayor Tully come speak with the students. Here is a picture of our class with the Mayor!!

There are lots of fun activities going on this week. Bowling is Monday morning. Please make sure your child brings a lunch from home on that day. Children typically end up eating a bunch of snacks at the bowling alley and then the food they order from our food service goes to waste because they either don't take a lunch or they throw it away.

Also, many children enjoy buying snacks at the bowling alley. This is optional and I suggest $5 as a good amount for food. I would not go any higher than $10.

Tuesday we are having our all school concert.

Friday we will be leaving to go to the Tivoli and watch Polar Express!

Thank you to the students who donated to the treasure chest this week! If you would like to donate to the treasure chest, that would be very helpful.

Math:
We have finished our time unit. Next week we will spend time reviewing all the concepts we have already learned. We will start our multiplication tests on Friday 12-21-12. The students will be tested on the squares…2x2, 3x3, 4x4…etc. Please be studying those at home.

Reading:
Elfredo (our class Elf) has been traveling around the world to all different places and he is going to share some of that information with us! The students will spend next week learning about Christmas in other parts of the world, and how they celebrate. This will be done in a group setting and they will present their country to the class.

Spelling:
We will be working on holiday words this week.

Important Info:
We have welcomed ELFREDO to our class this week; our little class elf that has been surprising the students and me all week long.

Can you believe we only have 10 school days until winter break! Time is flying!!

We are already half way through the second quarter so please take a look at your child’s grades online.

Thank you to the students who donated to the treasure chest this week! If you would like to donate to the treasure chest, that would be very helpful.

If you haven't already, please make sure to turn in your child's Tivoli permission slips.

Math:
We are continuing our telling time unit. We have covered reading a clock, a.m. and p.m., and elapsed time. Please continue to review elapsed time at home because it is a difficult skill as we will be reviewing in class. The test on time will be tentatively Friday, December 14.
We will also start multiplication timed tests. We will officially start the week of the 17. Next week we will learn that anything times 0=0 and anything times 1 is the other number. A great way to learn multiplication is reviewing over and over the facts.

We have started working on the story Dogzilla. We will work on visualizing with this story as well as working with cause and effect, point of view, and author's purpose as we plow through the weeks ahead.
